{"id":1157,"date":"2012-11-06T17:28:39","date_gmt":"2012-11-06T22:28:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.glso.org\/enews\/?p=1157"},"modified":"2012-11-06T17:29:40","modified_gmt":"2012-11-06T22:29:40","slug":"kentucky-book-fair-extends-invitation-to-transgender-author","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.glso.org\/enews\/2012\/11\/kentucky-book-fair-extends-invitation-to-transgender-author\/","title":{"rendered":"Kentucky Book Fair  Extends Invitation to  Transgender Author"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just one year after Chaz Bono\u2019s introduction of the transgender community to America via his appearance on \u201cDancing with the Starts,\u201d the Kentucky Book Fair extends an invitation to transgender author and Versailles resident, Alana Nicole Sholar, to participate in their 31st annual event.\u00a0 According to information found at their website, the Book Fair is Kentucky\u2019s premier literary event and one of the largest of its kind in the nation and is operated by a non-profit independent board of volunteers, with co-sponsorship from the State Journal (Frankfort\u2019s daily newspaper); the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (a state government entity); the University Press of Kentucky; and Joseph Beth Booksellers, Lexington, Kentucky. \u201cI guess you could say I was a little discouraged when we first contacted Connie Crowe, Manager of the Kentucky Book Fair, and asked how one goes about participating in the event.\u00a0 Ms. Crowe explained that participation is \u2018by invitation only,\u2019 after an author selection committee reviews submitted books.\u00a0 She also shared that \u2018nearly 400 books are submitted annually.\u2019\u00a0 With only enough space for about 150 authors to participate, I just assumed I was probably wasting my time submitting my memoir, \u201cHung in the Middle: A Journey of Gender Discovery.\u201d\u00a0 I assumed being self-published with the help of EWH Press, the number of books vying for participation in the event, and, of course, the possible controversy of inviting a transgender author to participate, there was no way I\u2019d receive an invitation.\u00a0 But, I assumed incorrectly,\u201d said Alana Nicole Sholar. \u201cOf course, I\u2019ve held book signings at and participated in several GLBT (gay, lesbian, bi, and transgender) events.\u00a0 However, being a transgender author invited to participate in an event as prestigious as the Kentucky Book Fair is not only a great honor, but it\u2019s huge for the community,\u201d shared Sholar.
