This is nothing fancy or formal. As a matter of fact, we invite you to bring a covered dish to share with the group, put your feet up, and simply tell your story.

“We know there are many LGBT older adults living in Lexington; we just don’t know who they are. It is easy for them to be over looked by aging services, because many still assume that people over a certain age are all straight. It will be very important to hear from our LGBT elders about what is good in their lives, and what they might have a need for. We should never assume we know what is best for someone else; we should listen to what they tell us.” Troy Johnson, MSW, Director of Programs and Services for the Nursing Home Ombudsman Agency and Chair of the Bluegrass Elder Abuse Prevention Council

If you are over 55, gay, lesbian, bi, or trans, we want to hear from you! We want to know how you are doing, and what concerns you might have about life as a senior in Lexington. Finally! Professionals in aging services are beginning to take an interest in the concerns of Lexington’s LGBT seniors! We hope to learn from each other and teach them how to better address our needs and concerns.

If you can’t join us in May, please try to make it to the potluck on Thursday, June 20 at 7:00pm. We will continue this very important conversation then. We hope to see you soon.

Support and participate in the Rally for Immigration Reform and Legalization with Dignity that it’s being organized in Lexington for this following Wednesday April 10, 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. This effort is part of similar events that will take place all over the country including a main one in Washington, DC.

The purpose and topic of the rally is to get our immigrant community and supporters to participate in the struggle for Legalization with Dignity and not just immigration reform. It’s also important to our efforts to get an immediate stop to the deportations of immigrants. Legalization with Dignity includes no hefty fines, inclusion of most undocumented immigrants living on the USA, path to citizenship, not exiting the country first condition, and equal treatment for same-sex families among other.

The issue of equal treatment for same-sex family is an integral part of the Legalization with Dignity efforts and the April 10 rally should be an opportunity for working together for a common goal: Legalization with Dignity.

We must ask House Leadership to let the veto stand by not taking a vote to override it and allowing for a necessary year to study the potential effects of this measure, thus ensuring future passage of the most responsibly written piece of legislation that preserves both civil rights and religious freedom in Kentucky.

Thanks for your continued efforts to defeat House Bill 279!

GLSO

Summary of HB279

The bill that could subvert current civil rights protections, House Bill 279, proposed by Rep. Bob Damron (D-Nicholasville), appears, on the surface, to be a simple iteration of an individual’s religious freedom, which the Fairness Campaign would support. The bill is written so broadly, however, that it could allow for challenges to existing anti-discrimination Fairness laws in Covington, Lexington. Louisville, & Vicco that protect lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals from employment, housing, and public accommodations discrimination. (The bill could also be used to challenge civil rights for people of color, women, and other protected classes of individuals, but federal protections for those groups would be upheld against HB279; there are no such federal protections for LGBT people.)

HB279 passed the House a week before the Senate with overwhelming support, though it quickly became clear the full impact of the law had not been studied. A day before passage, a Fairness ally had to swiftly remove their name as co-sponsor of the legislation, and others amended their votes days later in response to additional information. Rep. Darryl Owens (D-Louisville) proposed two simple amendments to the measure which would have ensured the protection of current civil rights laws in Kentucky. One, which requires that a governmental burden to one’s religious freedom be “substantial,” was adopted. The other, which included an exemption for civil rights laws, was not.

The bill went to Governor Beshear’s desk, where it was vetoed Friday. A simple majority vote in both chambers is required to override a Kentucky governor’s veto. The House and Senate have until 11:59 p.m. Tuesday night to vote to override the Governor’s veto, vote to let it stand, or take no action on it at all, allowing the veto to automatically stand.

HB279 is extremely bad for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Branded as the “Religious Freedom Bill,” it has the potential to gut and to void current Fairness Ordinances in Kentucky. The fact is that the bill is very vaguely written and states that people may opt out of certain laws or regulations based on personal religious belief. In a city like Lexington, which has had a Fairness Ordinance for more than ten years, people could try to fire people or evict them from rental housing based on sexual orientation because the boss or the landlord has religious beliefs in opposition to gay people.

In the interest of honesty, we must inform you that HB279 has already passed out of the House. It goes for a vote in the Senate Thursday. It is expected to pass. If it passes, it goes to the governor. He could veto the bill, but this does not seem likely either. We need people to call their legislators in the Senate and ask them to amend the bill to exempt already given civil rights on both a state and local level.

You can read further at the Fairness Campaign’s site here: http://www.fairness.org/TakeAction/CurrentLegislation/tabid/750/Default.aspx

You can also go to the ACLU’s website and click the Take Action icon. Clicking that button and taking 30 seconds to fill out the pre-written letter is a simple and effective way to get a message to your legislators. Go here: https://ssl.capwiz.com/aclu/issues/alert/?alertid=61070576&etname=KY_alert_03042013&etjid=734812

This issue is too important to our community. Please contact your legislators today.
